Today was nice. I slept in, ate a late breakfast, and then went downtown. Got off at Central station and went to a second hand store with the girl from Hong Kong, Vivian. Nothing much to buy there for her graphic design project (making a miniature model of a room), so we went on. We stopped by the Apple Store and drooled a bunch. Then went on further to a flea market place. It was awesome all the stuff they had there! I really wanted to get stuff, but I didn't have much cash on me since I loaned money to the Swiss girls for the dinner. Vivian ended up getting a few things from random booths and it looks like it should go together nicely. After that, we caught a bus to Burwood (suburb with a nice mall) and we were gonna go to the post office for postcards. She remembered they closed earlier on Saturdays, so we tried to catch a bus back that goes every 40 mins or so. She spotted it driving by and turning, so we broke out into a fast jog/relaxed sprint to catch it at the bus stop. It was crazy! I was near out of breathe when we sat down.
After getting back, I didn't do much. I had curry for dinner and watched the last half of Fargo since they had it in. Then we sat around and talking for a long time. I was dead tired from the day and nearly passed out. I talked to my mom and stepdad on the phone for over an hour at 12:30 though. I left in the beginning of Romeo and Juliet to talk to them.
Now to talk about something I've noticed. The entertainment capital of the world is without a doubt, America. 99% of the movies here are from Hollywood. There are a few from down under, but barely. I'd imagine the same goes for the music industry, but I can't be sure. The only Australian media I've seen is a few TV shows. I really feel for the people here when I notice this. I am not completely sure that my views are accurate though (maybe they have a thriving Australian movie business that I just haven't noticed) so this isn't the end of the line. The way I feel for them is their identity. They have declared independence although their ties are still not all broken to the Queen yet. They are a land without a voice. When they do have a voice, it is not met with open ears from other nations, I feel. This opinion/feeling also comes from hearing Aussies talk about their history/my classes. Australia was founded in 1906 I think. Early 1900s for sure. So young!
The Australian moviemakers must struggle big time, or move to America. No karaoke tonight. :( Maybe next time. I think tomorrow I will talk about Globalization, which has been on my mind for awhile now.

Australia was federated in 1901. :) But the colonies were founded in 1788 (Not so coincidentally close to American independence!)- the federation was when we were declared one nation rather than a bunch of different colonies.
And weirdly, we created the first full length feature movie! That obviously didn't get us very far in the film industry.
Lots of Australians are very annoyed about American media- it's why we get so pissed off when 'you' 'steal' a show off us or England. Or when Americans on the internet assume we have seen their shows- 'oh yeah he was the guy on American Idol, as if you don't know him!' 'um.... we have our OWN version, why would we see yours???'
It's very tense sometimes.
... and yes, I seem to be stalking your blog now. :P
